Philippines Mindanao quake kills 41, drives outdoor hospital care

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off Mindanao’s southern coast on Monday, killing 41 people, injuring more than 450 and displacing thousands. Aftershocks continued for hours, damaging roads, collapsing a bridge and cutting off several communities, especially in Sarangani province where access was limited to helicopters.

With hospitals damaged, medical staff set up outdoor treatment areas. More than 60 patients were placed on beds under tents, and a young mother gave birth outdoors at a makeshift screen. Rescue teams used dogs to search collapsed buildings, recovering workers trapped in a grocery store. Tsunami warnings were issued for the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan but were cancelled by midday after wave heights remained minimal.
