Philippines Mindanao quake kills 65, lifts sea floor up to 2 m

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026, killing at least 65 people, leaving 36 missing and displacing roughly 73,000 residents to evacuation centres. The tremor, centred 55 km deep, triggered a 1.48‑metre tsunami and caused the sea floor along the Pangian coast to rise up to two metres, pushing the shoreline back about 200 m and exposing reef‑dwelling marine life. Damage was reported to more than 57,000 homes and critical infrastructure such as roads and bridges. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited the hardest‑hit areas to oversee relief distribution.

A week later, on June 15, a magnitude‑6.2 aftershock occurred offshore near the municipality of Governor Generoso, at a depth of about 112 km. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the aftershock affected General Santos, Cotabato Sur and several surrounding towns. In total, the series of quakes has impacted 173,000 families – roughly 724,000 people – with 54,000 homes damaged and 9,900 completely destroyed. Relief and recovery operations continue across the region.
