Philippines monitors surge of Chinese vessels in West Philippine Sea

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported that 26 Chinese warships and coast‑guard vessels were observed in four key features of the West Philippine Sea between July 21 and July 26. The sightings included seven China Coast Guard (CCG) ships and two People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels at Ayungin Shoal, thirteen CCG ships at Bajo de Masinloc, one CCG ship at Escoda Shoal, and a mix of one CCG ship and two PLAN vessels near the Pag‑asa Islands. AFP officials said the monitoring reinforces the Philippines’ maritime domain awareness and affirmed the military’s readiness to defend national sovereignty.

Separately, China conducted joint naval and air exercises near the disputed Scarborough (Huangyan) Shoal on 20 August, testing coordination and rapid deployment capabilities. The drills followed Beijing’s criticism of Manila’s recent bid to extend its seabed claim at the United Nations and the issuance of new nature‑reserve rules for the shoal. The increased Chinese activity and the Philippines’ heightened vigilance have escalated tensions in the contested South China Sea region.
