Magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits Mindanao, Philippines, killing at least 15

A powerful magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani Province on Mindanao, Philippines, on 8 June. The quake, recorded at a depth of about 33‑35 km, caused at least 15 deaths and injured more than 200 people, with some reports citing 129 injuries. The strongest shaking affected General Santos City, where residential and commercial buildings were damaged and some structures collapsed. Power and communication services were disrupted in coastal areas of Sarangani.

Tsunami alerts were issued for the Philippines and neighboring countries including Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Guam and others. Initial forecasts warned of waves up to three metres, but observed heights peaked at about 1.4 m, leading authorities to gradually lift the warnings. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered government agencies to respond immediately and activated evacuation measures for coastal communities.
