Philippines Mindanao quake kills 45, injures over 480

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off Mindanao in the Philippines on 8 June, causing widespread devastation. Official death tolls rose to 45 and the number of injured reached between 487 and 500. More than 150,000 people and 33,000 families were affected, with over 41,000 residents displaced from their homes.

Damage assessments reported thousands of homes rendered uninhabitable, extensive destruction to schools, hospitals, bridges and other infrastructure, and an estimated 3,000 residential units suffering material loss. A tsunami warning was issued, though significant wave damage was limited to a single coastal village. Hundreds of aftershocks were recorded, and rescue operations continue across the hardest‑hit provinces of General Santos, Sarangani, South Cotabato and Davao Occidental. Authorities warned that damaged buildings could collapse further, delaying the reopening of schools and other public services.
