Philippines quake kills 47, injures hundreds and displaces thousands

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck the southern Mindanao coast of the Philippines on Monday, causing extensive damage. Official figures report 47 deaths, 31 missing persons and more than 688 injuries.

The disaster has directly affected about 3.46 million people, with over 75,000 families displaced. More than 45,000 individuals have sought temporary shelter, and over 12,600 homes were damaged. Landslides, road and bridge collapses, airport and port disruptions, and power outages in 48 municipalities followed the tremor.

The education sector suffered heavily, with 8,642 schools across six regions reporting damage, including a two‑storey school building that collapsed. Agriculture, livestock and fisheries also incurred heavy losses. Rescue and relief operations continue, and officials warn the casualty count could rise.
