Philippines quake of up to magnitude 8.1 triggers tsunami alerts

A powerful earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the Philippines on June 8, 2026. Initial reports gave magnitudes of 7.8, later updated to 8.1, with focal depths reported between 35 km and 57 km. The shock caused building collapses in General Santos and at least one confirmed death and four injuries.

Authorities issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas of the Philippines and neighboring countries, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan and Palau, with waves projected up to three metres. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered all relevant agencies to act and urged residents to move to higher ground. Police and fire services reported cracks in police stations and ongoing inspections of structures. Aftershocks continue to be recorded, and officials are monitoring the situation for further damage or casualties.
