Mindanao Earthquake Leaves 65 Dead and Triggers Massive Relief Effort

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on June 8, causing at least 65 fatalities, 36 missing persons and around 1,400 injuries. The tremor affected roughly 624,000 people in 432 barangays, displacing over 161,000 families and damaging infrastructure estimated at ₱1.13 billion.

The disaster sparked a state of calamity declaration, activated Level 3 disaster response, and prompted the Senate to file a resolution urging additional government funding for recovery. Rescue teams face landslides, road blockages and ongoing aftershocks, while the seabed uplift has raised new tsunami concerns. International agencies, including the UN OCHA, have deployed rapid‑response teams to assist with relief and assess liquefaction zones.

Hundreds of evacuation centers remain open, sheltering thousands, and the Philippine Red Cross is providing medical aid, food and psychosocial support. Authorities warn that aftershocks may continue for weeks, urging residents to avoid damaged structures and stay alert to further advisories.
