6.5‑6.6 Magnitude Quake Hits Mindanao, Philippines, No Tsunami Threat

A strong earthquake measuring between 6.5 and 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the southern Philippines near Mindanao on Friday evening. The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at a depth of about 65 km, while the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported a shallower depth of 10 km. The epicentre was located roughly 90 km southwest of Balut Island in Davao Occidental province. No tsunami warning was issued and no casualties or damage have been reported so far, though the tremor was felt across a wide area.

The event follows a devastating 7.8‑magnitude quake that hit Mindanao on 8 June, which caused at least 81 deaths, more than 1,300 injuries and displaced thousands of residents. Authorities warned that aftershocks could continue.
