Philippines says US stance on ICC will not affect Duterte trial
The Philippine government stated that recent calls from the United States for nations to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) will not impact the ongoing proceedings against former President Rodrigo Duterte. While US President Donald Trump has criticized the ICC as a “rogue institution,” Malacañang maintains that the legal process regarding Duterte’s alleged crimes against humanity during the war on drugs remains separate from Washington’s position.
Within the ICC proceedings, the prosecution is currently contesting defense challenges regarding eight specific incidents. The defense argues these incidents introduce new victims and locations not covered in the original charges. However, prosecutors have asked the Trial Chamber to reject these challenges, asserting that the details are necessary for disclosure obligations and fall within the established legal scope of the case.
