Mindanao, Philippines struck by 6.5‑6.7 quake as Japan feels separate tremor

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5‑6.7 struck the southern Philippines on 26 June 2026. The USGS and local agencies placed the epicentre about 35 km southwest of Balangonan in Mindanao, close to Sarangani province, at a depth of roughly 52‑66 km. No tsunami warning was issued and initial reports indicated no casualties or major damage, although authorities warned of possible aftershocks. The tremor follows a devastating 7.8‑magnitude quake that hit the same region on 8 June, killing 81 people, leaving 31 missing and displacing thousands.

On the same day a separate earthquake of magnitude 5.6‑6.0 occurred in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture near the Fuji Five Lakes area. The Japanese Meteorological Agency reported no tsunami risk and no immediate injuries or structural damage, though shaking was felt across Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. Both events underscore the heightened seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
