Philippines struck by 7.8‑magnitude quake, aftershocks and tsunami alerts

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the southern Mindanao region of the Philippines on June 8, 2026. The epicentre was located offshore near Sarangani province at a shallow depth of about 10 km. Initial reports confirmed at least 19 deaths and dozens of injuries, with many buildings collapsed, roads damaged and power and communications disrupted. Rescue teams from the army, police and disaster management agencies have been deployed, and more casualties are expected as search efforts continue.

The quake generated 138 aftershocks within two hours and prompted tsunami warnings for coastal areas of the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, Guam and Indonesia. Authorities urged people to move to higher ground, warning that waves could reach 1‑3 metres. International aid offers have been announced as the region copes with the ongoing emergency.
