Philippines targets 35% renewable energy share by 2030
The Philippines is accelerating its transition toward renewable energy, with the Department of Energy (DOE) aiming for a 35% clean energy share in the power generation mix by 2030, 50% by 2040, and over 50% by 2050.
Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin noted that renewable energy accounted for 25% of the national power mix as of 2025. To meet future targets, the DOE is focusing on expanding renewable energy capacity, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and deploying energy storage solutions. Key initiatives include the Green Energy Auction Program, which has supported solar, wind, biomass, and run-of-river technologies.
The 9th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO9) reinforces these national priorities, highlighting the need for diversified energy supplies and increased investment in grids and emerging technologies. The DOE is also exploring hydrogen and nuclear energy to ensure long-term reliability. Additionally, the country is seeing a surge in electric vehicle adoption, with registered units rising from 24,286 in 2024 to 60,906 in 2025, supporting a target of 50% EV penetration in road transport by 2040.
