Philippines targets durian market competition via Golden Puyat variety

The Philippines is positioning itself to compete more aggressively in the regional durian market. According to the Philippines Durian Export Association, the country currently manages approximately 15,000 hectares of durian, with production expected to reach 150,000 tons for the 2026/2027 season. About 40% to 50% of this output is considered suitable for export.

While China remains the primary destination, accounting for 90% of Philippine durian exports, the country currently holds less than 1% of China's total durian import market. To differentiate itself from competitors like Thailand (Monthong variety), Vietnam (Monthong), and Malaysia (Musang King), the Philippines is focusing on developing the 'Golden Puyat' variety as a unique brand identity.

Beyond China, Philippine exporters are targeting markets in Singapore, Japan, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. However, logistical challenges remain significant, as much of the production is located in Mindanao, far from major export hubs, complicating international shipping routes.
