Southeast Asian durian market competition

Overview

Southeast Asian nations are implementing distinct strategies to increase their presence in the global durian market, particularly targeting China.

The Philippines is focusing on brand differentiation through the development of the ‘Golden Puyat’ variety to compete against established varieties from Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. With production expected to reach 150,000 tons for the 2026/2027 season, the country aims to expand its export footprint beyond China to include markets in Singapore, Japan, North America, Europe, and the Middle East, despite logistical challenges in Mindanao.

Vietnam is seeing significant growth, with durian serving as a primary driver for its fruit and vegetable exports. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT) forecasts that annual durian exports could reach $4 billion in 2026. Beyond China, Vietnam is expanding into India following a July 2026 amendment to India’s Phytosanitary Order, while also negotiating access to Australia and New Zealand.

Malaysia is working to elevate its industry by promoting diverse flavor profiles—ranging from sweet custard to peanut butter and bitter notes—to encourage consumers to switch from foreign varieties. A central part of this effort is the Kuala Lumpur Durian Experience Centre, a $2 million facility opened in the summer of 2026. This center serves as a cultural and commercial hub to professionalize the sector and capture a larger share of the Chinese market, which saw imports valued at $7.5 billion in 2025.
