Philippines VP Sara Duterte faces impeachment trial in July

The Philippine Senate is set to convene as an impeachment court for Vice President Sara Duterte, with the trial slated to begin on July 6. Lead prosecutor Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro heads an 11‑member House prosecution panel that includes representatives such as Lorenz Defensor, Joel Chua, Leila de Lima, Chel Diokno and Terry Ridon. The panel has released a teaser video introducing its members, generating widespread online discussion.

Duterte faces accusations of misusing secret funds, bribing officials, amassing unexplained wealth and allegedly plotting violence against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and other officials. Prosecutors say the case will allow her to present a defense, while public prosecutor Chel Diokno emphasized the need for the Senate to hear the evidence without political bias.

Ahead of the trial, House lead prosecutor Luistro warned that disagreements between the prosecution and defense are normal in an adversarial proceeding. Meanwhile, a proposal to have Senator Chiz Escudero preside over the trial has drawn criticism from civil groups, who argue his past handling of impeachment matters could compromise impartiality.
