Philippines yacht fire disrupts Mindanao earthquake relief mission

A yacht transporting volunteers and humanitarian aid to communities in southern Mindanao caught fire on 12 June 2026. Thick smoke was spotted around midday, prompting the crew to evacuate all 42 passengers to a smaller vessel. All volunteers were rescued safely and taken to Barangay Pangyan in Glan, Sarangani, with no injuries reported. The blaze destroyed most of the relief cargo, with officials estimating only about five percent of supplies recovered.

The vessel, owned by Adventist‑Laymen’s Services & Industries, was heading to earthquake‑hit villages in Sarangani and Davao Occidental after a magnitude 7.8 quake disrupted road access. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Philippine Coast Guard. Mission leaders, including Pastor Nildo Mamac, stressed the priority of human lives, saying, “The safety of our volunteers remains our greatest blessing. Material things can be replaced, but lives cannot.” Organisers are arranging an alternative boat to deliver aid as soon as possible.
