Photography exhibitions of Avedon and Erwitt to open in Italy

Major photography exhibitions featuring 20th-century masters are scheduled to open in Italy.

In Rome, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will host the complete ‘In the American West, 1979–1984’ series by Richard Avedon from October 9, 2026, to January 31, 2027. This exhibition, curated by Clément Chéroux, presents 110 portraits that explore the less celebrated aspects of American life, moving away from Hollywood imagery to focus on the human condition. The works are provided by the Richard Avedon Foundation and include archival documents detailing the five-year project.

In Bologna, the Museo Civico Archeologico will present ‘Elliott Erwitt: The Art of Observing’ from October 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027. Curated by Biba Giacchetti, the exhibition features approximately 100 photographs that examine Erwitt’s career. The collection includes iconic works alongside personal pieces from his private collection that have never been publicly displayed, aiming to provide an intimate look at the photographer’s perspective on the human experience.
