Photography exhibitions in Italy

Overview

A series of major photography exhibitions are opening across various Italian cities, showcasing both historical masters and contemporary social reportage.

Initial exhibitions in Rome and Bologna focus on 20th-century portraiture and observation. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome is hosting Richard Avedon’s ‘In the American West, 1979–1984’ series, while the Museo Civico Archeologico in Bologna presents ‘Elliott Erwitt: The Art of Observing’.

Subsequent showcases expand the thematic scope to include war, migration, and social issues. At Castiglia di Saluzzo, the ‘Robert Capa. Dentro la storia’ exhibition explores the evolution of photojournalism through Capa’s war reportage. Simultaneously, the Filatoio di Caraglio is hosting a retrospective of Marc Riboud’s fifty-year career.

Newer programming in Turin at CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia features Letizia Battaglia’s work from 1970–2020, documenting Sicilian life and the mafia. In Trapani, the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea San Rocco hosts ‘CREPE’, an ethnographic project by Alessio Angelo and Antonino Lombardo regarding crack cocaine addiction in western Sicily.

Additional programming at Centro Trevi includes Annalisa Vandelli’s ‘Give me a reason’, which examines migration routes in Ethiopia and the Eritrean diaspora, and Cinzia Canneri’s ‘Women’s Bodies as Battlefields’, documenting the impact of conflict on women in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
