Photon-counting CT technology improves diagnostic precision and reduces radiation

Advancements in photon-counting computed tomography (CT) are enhancing medical imaging precision while reducing patient risks. The University Hospital Würzburg has implemented a third photon-counting CT device, which allows for up to a 50 percent reduction in radiation doses and a 50 percent decrease in the required amount of contrast media.

This technology captures individual X-ray photons and measures their energy, resulting in higher spatial resolution and clearer images. It enables faster whole-body scans and more precise visualization of minute structures, such as coronary artery branches, vessel wall deposits, and bone marrow tumor nests.

Research from the University of Zurich further highlights the technology's capabilities, noting its ability to produce ultra-high-resolution images and virtual monoenergetic images. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in imaging dental implants with high precision, potentially aiding in the assessment of bone-implant interfaces.
