Adoption of photon-counting CT technology in Europe
Overview
The implementation of photon-counting computed tomography (CT) technology is expanding across European medical institutions, offering enhanced diagnostic precision and improved patient safety.
In Croatia, Zagreb Clinical Hospital (KBC Zagreb) installed the first photon-counting CT scanner in the country’s public health system as part of a €20 million modernization program. The €3.5 million device aims to improve the detection of cardiovascular, neurological, and oncological diseases while reducing radiation exposure.
Further adoption of this technology is noted in Germany and Switzerland. The University Hospital Würzburg has implemented a third photon-counting CT device, which reportedly allows for a 50 percent reduction in radiation doses and a 50 percent decrease in required contrast media. Research from the University of Zurich indicates the technology provides ultra-high-resolution imaging, which is effective for visualizing minute structures such as coronary artery branches and dental implants.
