Photon Matrix develops AI-powered laser device to destroy mosquitoes
Chinese company Photon Matrix has developed a laser-based device designed to detect and destroy mosquitoes in mid-air. Utilizing a combination of LiDAR sensors, artificial intelligence, and signal processing, the system can identify targets at a distance of up to six meters. The entire process, from detection to action, takes approximately three milliseconds.
The technology uses LiDAR to create a three-dimensional image of the surrounding space. To prevent accidental targeting of other flying objects like flies, moths, or dust, the integrated AI analyzes the size and flight patterns of the object to confirm it is a mosquito before activating the laser. The manufacturer states that safety mechanisms are in place to automatically shut off the laser if a human enters the device's operating range.
The device is intended for use in enclosed spaces, yards, and camping environments. A home version is priced at $988, while an industrial version is available for $1,088. The technology is already being utilized in the Xinjiang region of northwest China, with the company expressing plans to export to other markets. However, independent testing regarding its long-term efficacy in reducing mosquito populations remains unavailable.
