Photon Matrix launches laser-based mosquito defense system

Photon Matrix Lab has transitioned its mosquito-targeting laser device from a crowdfunding project to a commercial product. The Photon Matrix Blue Laser Mosquito Air Defense is now available for preorder through the company’s official store and Indiegogo.

Designed for outdoor environments such as backyards and campsites, the system utilizes a combination of LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, and AI-powered computer vision to identify mosquitoes. The device can detect insects as small as 2 millimeters flying at speeds up to 1 meter per second within a six-meter, 90-degree scanning area. Once a target is identified, a galvanometer-driven Class 4 laser beam is directed to eliminate the insect. The system is engineered to distinguish mosquitoes from other flying insects like butterflies.

Users can manage the device via a smartphone application, which provides heat maps, kill histories, and a global leaderboard. The app also allows for scheduling and adjusting scanning parameters. While the outdoor version uses a visible blue laser, an indoor variant featuring an invisible infrared system is also being offered. The outdoor model can be powered by a portable power bank for extended use.
