Phu Quoc International Airport completes first ILS/DME calibration flight
On 27 July, Phu Quoc International Airport carried out its first calibration flight on runway 2 despite adverse weather. The aircraft was a Czech‑registered Beechcraft B300 King Air 350ER (registration OK‑ANS) flown by a mixed Vietnamese‑Czech crew that departed from Can Thơ Airport and performed approaches to runway 28R. The flight tested and calibrated the ILS/DME navigation system and the PAPI runway‑end lighting.
The new lighting system, supplied by ADB Safegate, allows each LED to be controlled independently from a remote console, creating a 3.3 km “light strip” that improves safety, especially for night operations. Sun Group, the airport’s developer, said the successful trial marks a key milestone in meeting its commitments for the APEC 2027 summit. Runway 2, 3.3 km long and 45 m wide, meets ICAO Code E standards and can accommodate wide‑body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777, ensuring the airport is ready for the anticipated international traffic.
