Phu Tho provincial police have arrested and detained Nguyen The Duy, 23, for intentionally causing injury to five young monks at Bau Pagoda (Phật Quang Tự). The incident, which was captured on video and circulated on social media, shows the suspect using a handmade branch-whip to strike the children.

During interrogation, Duy admitted to the assault, claiming he used the whip as a deterrent because the children were not following instructions or keeping their rooms clean. The suspect had been practicing at the temple since March 2026.

Following the incident, local authorities moved four of the children, who are from Khanh Hoa, to a provincial social protection center to ensure their safety and well-being. One child was reunited with their family in Yen Lac. The Ministry of Health has also intervened, requesting the provincial Department of Health to investigate the matter and review the safety and supervision of social assistance facilities in the region.
