Phyna wins historic female celebrity boxing bout in Lagos
The ‘Chaos in the Ring’ boxing event held on October 1 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos featured several high-profile bouts. In the professional main event, Ghana’s Seth ‘Freezy Macbones’ Gyimah secured the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship by defeating Nigeria’s Godday ‘Zodsolo’ Appah via unanimous decision after ten rounds.
In the celebrity matches, reality TV star Phyna made history by winning Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout, securing a fourth-round knockout victory over actress Nkechi Blessing. Phyna, who reportedly won ₦50 million, a new car, and a championship belt, attributed her win to strategic logic rather than raw power. Nkechi Blessing, who noted she had only two days of training, expressed that she remains a champion despite the loss.
Following her victory, Phyna challenged actress Etinosa Idemudia to a future bout, a challenge Idemudia accepted. Phyna also declined a suggestion from comedian DeeOne to fight professional boxer DJ Dimple Nipple, citing safety concerns. In another celebrity match, skit maker Carter Efe defeated rapper Speed Darlington via technical knockout, maintaining his unbeaten record in the series.
