Phyna and Nkechi Blessing Sunday boxing dispute

Overview

The dispute between Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday and reality television star Phyna began as a public social media confrontation. Nkechi Blessing Sunday criticized Phyna for frequent online conflicts, which Phyna responded to by labeling the criticism as bullying.

The conflict escalated to a physical confrontation during the ‘Chaos in the Ring’ celebrity boxing event held on October 1 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. Phyna, also known as Josephina Otabor, secured a fourth-round knockout victory over Nkechi Blessing Sunday, marking Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout. For her win, Phyna received a championship belt, a new car, and a ceremonial ₦50 million cheque. Phyna attributed her victory to “strategic logic rather than raw power.”

Nkechi Blessing Sunday defended her performance, noting she had only trained for two days prior to the fight and maintained that she “remains a champion despite the loss.” Following the match, Phyna expressed interest in a future bout against actress Etinosa Idemudia, who has accepted the challenge. Phyna also declined a suggestion from comedian DeeOne to fight professional boxer DJ Dimple Nipple, citing safety concerns.
