Physicians urge flu vaccinations to protect vulnerable children

Data from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) indicates that vaccination can reduce the risk of flu-related death in children and teens by approximately 80% and prevents thousands of hospitalizations annually. Recent trends show high severity in pediatric cases, with the 2025-26 season reporting approximately 190 pediatric deaths and high hospitalization rates. Current vaccination rates for children aged 6 months to 17 years remain relatively low at approximately 49%.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated the three virus components for the 2026-27 flu vaccine to better align with expected circulating strains. Medical professionals emphasize that vaccinating eligible household members can provide an additional layer of protection for infants and high-risk individuals.
