Medellín hosts Climate Week 2026 with major policy and infrastructure shifts
During Climate Week Medellín 2026, several major environmental and infrastructure developments were announced in Colombia. Environment Minister Fabio Arjona confirmed the government will revoke Decree 973 of 2026 regarding carbon markets due to technical inconsistencies and legal imperfections that hindered private investment.
In terms of infrastructure, Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez announced that the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) has approved a $300 million credit line for the construction of the San Antonio de Prado metrocable. This zero-emission electric transport system is expected to begin construction in 2027 and will connect Medellín, La Estrella, and Itagüí.
Additionally, Asocapitales signed the Medellín Declaration to strengthen cooperation between local governments on climate solutions. Regional environmental entities, such as the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Atlántico (C.R.A.), also participated in the week to discuss water resource management and climate adaptation strategies.
