Medellín urban and economic development

Overview

Medellín is undergoing significant environmental, infrastructural, and economic transitions. During Climate Week 2026, the Colombian government announced the revocation of Decree 973 of 2026 concerning carbon markets due to “technical inconsistencies and legal imperfections.” Concurrently, a $300 million credit line from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean was approved for the San Antonio de Prado metrocable, a zero-emission electric transport system scheduled for construction in 2027.

In the economic sector, the city’s creative industries are driving growth, generating approximately $1.67 trillion annually. However, this expansion and a rising tourism sector have contributed to urban challenges, including a housing deficit of roughly 38,000 homes and substantial increases in rental prices in neighborhoods such as El Poblado and Guayabal. These shifts have prompted local debates regarding the city’s Territorial Land Use Plan.
