Piauí prepares for elections with record voting machines and alcohol ban
In Piauí, Brazil, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-PI) is preparing for a high-volume election using a record 11,300 electronic voting machines. Officials expect to announce the new governor by 9:00 PM on election Sunday. To facilitate faster processing, the court has installed over 1,100 new voting sessions, and 80% of the machines in use are modern models.
To maintain public order, the state government has implemented an electoral 'dry law' (Lei Seca). This mandate prohibits the sale and purchase of alcoholic beverages across all municipalities in Piauí for a 24-hour period, starting at 6:00 PM on October 3 and ending at 6:00 PM on October 4. The Piauí Public Security Secretariat (SSP-PI) noted that failure to comply with these restrictions may result in criminal charges for disobedience or causing public disorder.
