Ecuador suspends Quito's pico y placa on June 26 holiday

The Ecuadorian government issued Executive Decree No. 431, declaring Friday June 26 2026 a non‑recoverable national holiday. In response, the Agencia Metropolitana de Tránsito (AMT) suspended the pico y placa vehicle‑restriction scheme in Quito for the entire day, allowing all cars and motorcycles to circulate without limits. The AMT confirmed that its six technical‑inspection centers will operate on their normal schedule, while administrative offices remain closed due to the holiday. Authorities warned that traffic may increase on outbound routes and advised drivers to plan ahead, respect speed limits and exercise caution.

Separately, the Agencia Nacional de Tránsito (ANT) also halted public service on June 26 and extended the validity of expired driver’s licenses until August 31 2026, providing additional flexibility for motorists whose licences expired on June 30.

The combined measures aim to accommodate the holiday while managing urban mobility and minimizing congestion.
