Piedmont Extends African Swine Fever Control Measures

Regional president Alberto Cirio signed an ordinance that takes effect immediately and prolongs Piedmont's African swine fever (ASF) eradication and surveillance actions for 60 days. The decree confirms the continuation of controlled culling of wild boar by provincial authorities, supported by the hunting community, to prevent the disease from reaching domestic pig farms.

Assessors Paolo Bongioanni (Agriculture, Tourism, Sport) and Federico Riboldi (Health) said the steps are essential to safeguard the region's swine sector, noting that ASF poses no direct risk to human health but represents a serious animal‑health emergency. The ordinance maintains full biosafety, monitoring and coordination among veterinary services, the regional zooprophylactic institute and other operators. It will remain in force for 60 days unless superseded by new national measures or a change in the epidemiological situation.
