Italy records warmest summer since 1950

Italy has recorded its warmest summer since 1950, according to data from the National Research Council (CNR). The summer of 2026 saw a national average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius, with August reaching a national average of 25.6 degrees Celsius. For the first time in the historical series, July and August were consecutively the hottest months recorded.

Regional data highlights extreme temperature anomalies. Lombardy experienced its hottest summer since 1951, with average temperatures 3.1 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 baseline. Veneto also recorded its hottest summer ever, surpassing the previous record set in 2003. In Piedmont, the summer was the warmest since 1958.

Following the record heat, weather patterns are shifting toward instability. Significant storm alerts and temperature drops have been issued for several regions, including Lombardy, Lazio, and Piedmont, as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to replace the prolonged heatwaves.
