Dermatological and health advice during heatwaves
Overview
Dermatologists and health experts continue to provide guidance on managing environmental stressors during intense heatwaves. Recent updates emphasize seasonal strategies, such as ‘skinimalism’ during spring to avoid aggravating dry skin, and managing oil and pollution buildup during summer. Following periods of intense summer heat, experts are warning of long-term damage, including pronounced wrinkles and dark spots on the forehead, eyes, and lips. Emanuele Bartoletti, president of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine (Sime), notes that skin condition depends heavily on summer preparation and the use of antioxidant supplements. He stresses the critical importance of consistent sunscreen use to prevent skin tumors, countering social media misinformation, and warns that intense sun can trigger the transformation of actinic keratosis into tumors.
As Italy faces extreme heat, the Ministry of Health has issued red alerts (level 3) for nine cities, including Rome, Bari, and Palermo. While temperatures in Puglia and Basilicata are expected to reach between 42°C and 44°C, parts of Sardinia and Sicily could see even higher peaks of 45°C to 48°C. This heat is driven by a subtropical anticyclone and accompanied by Saharan dust, which may create hazy or milky skies. Meteorologists have noted that these intense weather patterns, including ‘ultra-tropical nights’ where minimum temperatures remain above 25°C, serve as a manifestation of climate change.
Medical experts are also addressing the impact of ‘tropical nights’ on sleep. Luigi Ferini-Strambi of San Raffaele Hospital notes that high heat and humidity prevent the body from naturally lowering its core temperature. High humidity is expected to increase physical discomfort and may complicate breathing for those with respiratory issues or snoring tendencies. In response to the risks posed to workers, the CGIL union has activated a dedicated toll-free assistance number.
