Piedmont reports 30 mushroom poisoning cases in 2025
The Piedmont region in Italy has reported 30 cases of suspected mushroom poisoning or intolerance so far in 2025. The incidents involved 24 adults and 6 children across 22 separate episodes. While all affected individuals sought emergency medical care, no fatalities have been recorded. This figure represents a decrease from 2024, which saw 58 involved individuals.
Regional authorities noted that in all recorded cases, the mushrooms were gathered privately and consumed at home. Health officials warned that risks arise not only from poisonous species but also from the improper storage, excessive consumption, or inadequate preparation of edible mushrooms.
To mitigate these risks, the Piedmont region offers free identification services through local health authority (ASL) mycological inspectorates. In 2025, these services have handled 1,417 consultations and certifications, performing 1,634 species identifications for private citizens.
