Piedmont wine sector confronts overproduction and regulatory hurdles

A sector conference held at the La Fontanassa farm in Gavi brought together major actors of Piedmont's wine industry. Organized by Cia Alessandria‑Asti, the meeting highlighted the economic, social and cultural importance of viticulture while addressing challenges such as international competitiveness and sustainability. National Cia officials discussed labor contract options under DL 63 Agriculture, noting the need for implementing decrees to safeguard the sector.

In a separate interview, Filippo Mobrici, president of the Consorzio Barbera d’Asti and viticulture manager of Bersano, warned that rising wine inventories signal deeper structural problems. He argued that the region has not followed a coherent planting strategy, leading to excess stock of varieties like Nebbiolo. Mobrici called for comprehensive planning and better governance to align production with market realities.
