Piemonte mushroom foraging season begins with new regulations

As the mushroom foraging season begins in the Piemonte region of Italy, local authorities have outlined specific regulations and safety services for foragers.

In Piemonte, collectors are limited to a maximum of 3 kg of mushrooms per day. Foraging requires a valid permit, which can be obtained as daily, weekly, annual, or multi-year options. To protect the ecosystem and the underground mycelium, the use of rakes or hooks is prohibited, and mushrooms must be transported in ventilated containers rather than plastic bags to allow for spore dispersal.

To ensure food safety, the Usl Mycological Inspectorate has reopened its free consultation service in Quart. Qualified mycologists are available by appointment through November to verify the edibility of mushrooms intended for family consumption. Experts advise that there are no reliable folk methods, such as using garlic or metal, to test for toxicity; professional species identification is the only safe method. Additionally, it is recommended that children and pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid consuming mushrooms, and all edible species should be thoroughly cooked.
