Pieria Medical Association warns of West Nile virus

The Medical Association of Pieria has issued a public health warning regarding the West Nile virus following recent local cases and increased mosquito activity during the summer season.

While most infections are asymptomatic, some individuals may experience fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, or skin rashes. In rare instances, the virus can affect the central nervous system, leading to severe conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis. High-risk groups include the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic underlying health conditions.

As there is no specific antiviral treatment or approved vaccine for humans, the association emphasizes prevention through several measures: • Using approved insect repellents. • Wearing long, light-colored clothing. • Utilizing window screens and mosquito nets. • Eliminating standing water in flowerpots, trays, containers, and gutters to prevent mosquito breeding.

Immediate medical evaluation is advised if symptoms such as high fever, intense headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or neurological symptoms occur.
