Alpine appeals pit‑lane penalties that stripped Pierre Gasly’s Monaco podium

At the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in third place after a strong drive from ninth on the grid. He was then handed two five‑second penalties for exceeding the 60 km/h pit‑lane speed limit – one infraction was 0.1 km/h over, the other 0.4 km/h – which dropped him to seventh and cost Alpine nine championship points and a podium.

Alpine immediately lodged a formal Right of Review request with the FIA, stating that the team had set the speed limiter correctly and that the penalties were “unfair”. The team’s statement read: “We have requested a Right of Review from the FIA regarding the penalties applied for pit lane speeding.”

Gasly expressed his anguish, saying “I’m heartbroken right now” and “It’s 10 years I’m working my ass off for this type of moment”. The FIA explained that pit‑lane speed is measured by electronic timing loops rather than radar, and that cutting the white line at Monaco’s pit entry can affect the calculation, a factor cited by several other drivers who received similar penalties (Franco Colapinto, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Oscar Piastri, among others).

The Right of Review process requires new, significant evidence not available at the time of the original decision, so the likelihood of a reversal is uncertain. Until the FIA rules, the result stands, but Alpine’s appeal keeps the controversy alive.
