PIMS fire death toll rises to 15 as last surviving newborn dies
The death toll from the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has risen to 15 following the death of the last surviving newborn from the incident. The infant girl, who was rescued from the blaze by a nurse, died on September 17 after 22 days of treatment. According to her death certificate, she suffered from severe complications including sepsis, pulmonary bleeding, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), ultimately succumbing to cardiac and respiratory arrest.
In a related development in Islamabad, police have registered a case regarding the abduction of a newborn boy from PIMS. The mother reported that three women took the infant from the hospital; however, the child was recovered shortly after by a security guard, a doctor, and the complainant’s mother-in-law. The suspects have been handed over to authorities for legal action.
Separately, Islamabad police reported a surge in criminal activity, registering at least a dozen cases of kidnapping and disappearances in a single day. These cases involve various victims, including women, minors, and a factory worker.
