Overview

The fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad resulted in the deaths of 14 newborns in the hospital’s gynaecology ward. While 15 infants were present in the nursery when the blaze began around 6:45 a.m. on August 26, only one was successfully rescued. Following the tragedy, the Pakistani government approved the installation of modern fire safety systems, including sprinklers and alarms, across federal buildings and ministries. The Capital Development Authority has increased enforcement, sealing several buildings for violations and fining PIMS, Polyclinic, and Capital Hospital Rs. 500,000 each. Additionally, in Faisalabad, the Water and Sanitation Agency has launched an initiative to install 20 fire hydrants across various government hospitals to enhance emergency firefighting capabilities.

Legal proceedings have escalated as the Islamabad High Court ordered authorities to submit replies within 15 days regarding a petition seeking a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) inquiry. The petition, filed by Nasir Azim Khan, alleges gross negligence and administrative failure, seeking accountability for the PIMS executive director and other responsible officers. Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar has also directed authorities to submit a report on the incident, including any reports previously presented to the prime minister.
