Pinar del Río shipwreck kills two during migration attempt to Mexico

A shipwreck off the coast of Pinar del Río, Cuba, has resulted in the deaths of at least two young people during an attempted migration to Cancún, Mexico. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 8, near the Las Martinas area in the municipality of Sandino.

The vessel, described as a small speedboat with a single motor, was reportedly part of an illegal human trafficking operation. After experiencing mechanical failure, the boat was pushed by heavy waves toward sharp rock reefs known as “los paredones.” In an attempt to reach safety, several occupants jumped into the water to swim to shore; however, two individuals, identified in one report as 17-year-old Leodannis Sánchez and 19-year-old Osmaikel, drowned.

More than ten people survived the incident. Local authorities, including the Border Guard Troops and the National Revolutionary Police, responded to the scene. Three individuals suspected of being involved in the logistics of the voyage have been taken into custody, and reports indicate that survivors are also being detained by officials.
