Cuban maritime migration attempts to Mexico

Overview

In August 2026, a shipwreck occurred off the coast of Pinar del Río, Cuba, during an attempted migration to Cancún, Mexico. A small speedboat, reportedly part of an illegal human trafficking operation, suffered mechanical failure and was pushed toward reefs known as “los paredones.” Two individuals, identified as 17-year-old Leodannis Sánchez and 19-year-old Osmaikel, drowned while attempting to swim to shore. More than ten people survived, and authorities detained three individuals suspected of managing the voyage logistics.

By September 2026, reports indicated a trend of using high-speed boats for these dangerous maritime journeys. A new vessel carrying 21 individuals departed from Dimas, in the municipality of Mantua, Pinar del Río, heading toward Mexico. This follows other recent incidents, including a group of 19 Cubans who went missing from Havana but were later partially rescued by the Mexican Navy near Yucatán.
