Taiwan election candidates face land and bribery allegations

Political tensions are rising in Taiwan's upcoming elections, centered on allegations of corruption, land development controversies, and inconsistent legal standards for election bribery.

In New Hsinchu County, candidates are facing intense scrutiny. Cheng Chao-fang is embroiled in controversies regarding land transactions and potential development interests in areas like Zhudong and Shenqu Village. Allegations have been made regarding the potential conversion of recreational land into funeral or construction sites. Meanwhile, Kuomintang (KMT) legislators are supporting Hsü Hsin-ying, advocating for a “sunny administration” to counter perceived influence from money and power.

Adding to the friction, media personality Wu Tzu-chia has claimed to face death threats after exposing local disputes, prompting calls for judicial investigation. Concurrently, KMT candidates have criticized the Ministry of Justice for what they term “double standards” in bribery investigations, alleging that while KMT candidates are penalized for small gifts like noodles or tofu pudding, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidates appear to avoid scrutiny for providing meals and drinks during campaign events.
