Taiwan 2026 local election preparations

Taiwan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced the schedule for the 2026 nine-in-one local elections, which are set for November 28. The election will involve approximately 19.65 million voters and the selection of 11,051 local officials.

To manage the complexity of the vote, the CEC is implementing new measures, including updated candidate deposit requirements and enhanced protections for the secret voting rights of indigenous voters. The commission has also established a task force to combat AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation, collaborating with the Ministry of Digital Affairs to launch a reporting network and conducting cybersecurity testing on counting systems.

In response to potential electoral misconduct, authorities have intensified anti-bribery and anti-fraud campaigns. Prosecutors have warned against illegal activities such as vote-buying, fraudulent household registration changes, and election gambling. Under Ministry of Justice guidelines, informants reporting foreign interference may receive rewards of up to NT$20 million. Additionally, local bureaus have conducted training sessions for staff to strengthen awareness of information security and legal regulations to ensure a secure administrative environment.
