PIO Fund clarifies rules for voluntary pension contributions

Under Article 15 of the Law on PIO, individuals not in an employment relationship may voluntarily enroll in mandatory pension and disability insurance. This allows citizens, such as those who are unemployed, to pay their own contributions to build service years.

According to the PIO Fund, if an individual stops paying contributions but fails to formally request a deregistration, they do not automatically accumulate infinite debt. If contributions remain unpaid for six months from the due date, the status of the insured person is terminated by official duty. In such cases, insurance coverage ceases on the last day for which contributions were duly paid, and service years are recognized only up to that point.
