Serbia PIO Fund pension and contribution updates
Overview
The Republic Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIO Fund) in Serbia has provided updates regarding contribution rules and upcoming financial adjustments for pensioners. Initially, the PIO Fund clarified regulations under Article 15 of the Law on PIO, stating that individuals not in an employment relationship, such as the unemployed, may voluntarily enroll in mandatory pension and disability insurance to build service years. The Fund noted that if contributions remain unpaid for six months from the due date, the insured person’s status is terminated by official duty, and coverage ceases on the last day contributions were duly paid.
Subsequently, PIO Fund Director Relja Ognjenović announced that 377.2 million euros in state aid was scheduled for disbursement on September 14. Following this, Ognjenović announced that the distribution of state aid is complete, with funds transferred to banks and the Post of Serbia following the early disbursement of pensions for all categories.
Regarding future adjustments, Ognjenović highlighted a scheduled 7.5 percent pension increase for December. This adjustment is expected to raise the average pension to approximately 61,100 dinars, or about 522 euros.
Additional social support measures have been outlined, including 240 million dinars for solidarity aid packages, over one billion dinars for free spa stays, and more than 30 million dinars for social standards and cultural activities. Furthermore, a new comprehensive package with the medical sector is being prepared to expand coverage across Serbia, and pensioners will receive significant discounts at over 160 locations via pensioner cards.
