Piombino council backs urban commerce law and faces scrutiny over beach seagrass work

The governing majority in Piombino – comprising Lista Ferrari Sindaco, Fratelli d’Italia, Lega Salvini Premier, Piombino Civica and Forza Italia – announced its support for the national proposal “Misure per la rigenerazione urbana del commercio e dei servizi di prossimità”, developed with Confesercenti. The council plans to place the proposal on the agenda in September, arguing that the rise of e‑commerce and large retail centres has led to shop closures, loss of social cohesion and growing desertification of historic city centres.

Separately, the Piombino municipal administration has been criticised for a beach‑cleaning operation at Salivoli that relocated Posidonia seagrass. Local list Piombino Domani highlighted that the Superintendence had declared on 30 April that the request was “inadmissibile” because the activity did not qualify as a “light‑impact” work, yet the operation proceeded under a municipal permit. The group demanded that all related documents be published, quoting the Superintendence’s statement that “nessuna autorizzazione da parte della Soprintendenza”.
