Petralona Apartment Block Collapse Triggers Arrests of Builders

A four‑storey apartment building on Alkminis street in the Petralona district of Athens partially collapsed on Tuesday midday. Police detained five people – the building’s owner, the contractor, and three engineers – who were linked to construction work on an adjacent site. The suspects claim they warned residents to leave the block because heavy machinery and a concrete mixer caused excessive noise and vibrations shortly before the collapse.

Authorities are examining whether the work had the required permits and safety measures. The police, fire services and rescue teams, including specially trained K9 units, responded quickly; all known residents were evacuated safely. The Athens Municipality set up temporary accommodation for displaced families at the Koinotita Filias club in Kato Petralona and provided emergency financial aid and basic supplies through its Street Work team. The investigation continues, with further checks on building stability and possible liability.

The incident has prompted scrutiny of construction oversight and building safety regulations in the capital.
